What we do…
Project Food Forest was founded in 2016 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Our goal is to encourage, empower, and equip people to plant and care for edible plants all over. We intend to do this by planting public food forests; implementing programs that add edible trees and shrubs to existing public landscaping; designing low-maintenance edible landscapes for private clients in South Dakota, Minnesota and beyond; and educating the public about planting, harvesting, preserving, and eating low-maintenance edible landscapes through classes, workshops, and online resources.
Public food forests can range in size from a single fruit tree guild to large food forests that can even provide enough yields to donate substantial supplies. Ultimately, the size of food forests depend on the land that is made available to be utilized.

Food For All
Many public food forests are open and available for everyone – no income limits or special qualifications necessary. To find a map of many of these spaces, visit Map – Community Food Forests

Business Structure
Project Food Forest is a 501(c)(3) “for-purpose” organization. We depend on grants and donations as well as income-generating activities. Income-generating activities include public and private permaculture and edible landscape design, classes, and workshops. The charitable activities that those functions support include public food forests and other activities that support our mission such as working with cities to plant native edible species in the place of removed invasive species.
